About Dakine

Dakine was founded in Hawaii in 1979 and located at the base of Mt. Hood in Hood River, Oregon, Dakine builds backpacks, travel bags, accessories, outerwear and clothing for people who love to surf, snowboard, skateboard, mountain bike, ski, windsurf, kiteboard and travel.

Outside the bag

On the outside of the bag there are two pockets for easy access to store smaller items needed on the go. Being this easy to access does mean however that they are easy to access by anyone else, so it would be advisable not to store travel documents or passports in these pockets. We would also advise to use a padlock on the top pocket, (which has two zips) as the other pocket only has one zip.

Inside the bag

As in the name the Dakine split roller opens up from the middle and splits into two sections, the first section being one large compartment for clothing and the other section being three smaller compartments. We love this design as it means you have easy access and can simply split up your packing, so less rummaging through your bag when you need something quickly. When travelling I’m quite particular as I spend a lot of time moving around the globe, so for me these compartments are a godsend. I use mine for shoes, medical supplies and the remaining sections for a wash bag and toiletries or a section to put my dirty clothing in.

Handling & mobility

In total there are 5 handles in various areas of the bag for easy handling at every angle. Even with a large amount of luggage (as this is the larger 100L) the handles feel sturdy and able to deal with the weight. The bottom handle is reinforced and acts as a prop for your bag when in the upright position. There is also a telescopic handle that with one easy click, pops in and out of the bag, which is perfect for when pulling the bag through the airport.

On the bottom of the bag are hard protectors both in the middle and on the corners, which slightly raise the bag off the ground. The telescopic handle also has surrounding protectors. The bag is made from rip stop material, which gives it lasting durability and there is a name card situated on the back.

The Dakine 100L split roller comes equipped with urethane wheels, which glide across hard floor’s beautifully. This makes for a much easier luggage experience. However as the wheels are exposed I always come equipped with some duck tape to tape down the wheels when in transit (as we all know how the bag can sometimes have a bit of a bumpy journey in the hold!) This is just to make sure that the wheels are not damaged in transit. The good news is that they are replaceable and you can order extras from the Dakine website.

How did it do in our product test?

After taking the bag on 3 flights across Canada this summer, and various coach trips, road trips and walking around big cities, it endured a lot of bumping and throwing about. It proved to be a great travel bag with the guards around it protecting the more vulnerable areas such as wheels and bottom. It did take on a few scratches on the front when I had a bit of a issue coming up an escalator. We loved how mobile this bag is, the wheels glided across the big city walkways and airport floors with ease and you never felt strained. The handle is a perfect height for pulling and I found it is much easier to pull the bag with your knuckles facing downwards on the handle as it is less strain on the wrist. The many handles on the bag made picking it up to walk up flights of stairs and putting into a car really easy. The split design made it easy for us both to find what we needed quickly and kept us organised. We never really fully unpacked in the two weeks we were in Canada as we were moving every 2 or so days so the split design was the best idea possible.

Colour selection

The great thing about Dakine luggage and backpacks is they always come in various colourways, which is great to suit everyones personalities and tastes. We have both purchased the Dakine 100L split roller in Glisan Courtesy of boardridersguide.com.

Overall the Dakine 100L split roller is in our opinion a great bag for longer journeys. Its easy access compartments make for easier travel and organisation – something that you do not see very often with other brands. The price compared to what you may get for other large brands is highly competitive.

We also nabbed ours in the board riders guide sale, which was an amazing price!
